While I was living in New England, I did a lot of work for Northeastern. This production of the Liz Swados musical centered around a group of runaway children. While the environment isn’t specific in the script, at the start I envisioned urban exteriors for these homeless kids. The director instead wanted an interior -  somewhere the children could break into to find shelter at the end of the day. So basketball court became old school gymnasium. I layered 70’s Headstart graphics under more contemporary graffiti. This abandoned school basement provided a sense of enclosure and intimacy which was important and wasn’t without its irony as the country’s failed institutions become a temporary home for these characters.
