Unless
steered otherwise by a director, I almost always take my cues from the
language of the written script. If the language is naturalistically
structured, then so usually will I structure my set. This is not to
say Im not interested in looking at all sorts of alternative staging
for a "realistically" written piece, but for me, the focus
is the relationship created by performer and audience. A visual language
that contradicts the written one in its style calls attention to itself,
and I think, can compromise the delicate "suspension of disbelief".
This is not to say that Hamlet shouldnt occasionally ride roller
skates, only that the production had better provide a good framework
for such an aerobic interpretation.
